Quality Control of Concrete in the Southern Region of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Using Local Materials | Osama K Adwan

Osama K Adwan |  Quality Control of Concrete in the Southern Region of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Using Local Materials Research Article A common concern amongst civil engineers is producing a good quality concrete on-site. This paper reports results of a study carried out to examine the quality of normal strength concrete production in the southern region of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) made from local coarse aggregate namely Basalt. As all data were analyzed and examined statistically using Chebyshev’s theorem and the Statistical Empirical Rule (SER) method presented herein. It is concluded that, the normal distribution of all test results -in terms of the quality of concrete mix- was strongly agree with Chebyshev’s theorem and ACI 318-14 section 5.6.3. In addition, these results were considerably better than the Statistical Empirical Rule (SER) method. Overall, these concrete mixes, in this investigation, with 28 days compressive strength of 35 MPa can be used confidently in concr...

Iris Publishers - Journal of Civil Engineering Mechanical Metastructure in Structural Engineering: A Short Review In this paper a short review on the mechanical metastructure applied in civil and structural engineering is considered. This metastructure represents the macro version of the metamaterial which is a kind of composite. The main property of the mechanical metastructure is to mitigate and suppress vibration in systems. Depending on the configuration it represents vibration isolator or absorber which stops the low-frequency vibrations and forms an oscillation band-gap. Various types of mechanical metastructures with negative effective mass and negative stiffness are presented. In the paper the auxetic structures with negative Poison’s coefficient for vibration elimination are also considered. The future investigation in the matter is suggested. Read More ...    Iris Publishers - Open Access Journal of Civil Engineering Approach to Increasing the Carrying Capacity of the Pile Base The problem of increasing a foundation bearing capacity is always an urgent problem in geotechnical construction. With increased loads on the base, the use of traditional technologies is not always justified. It is necessary to use non-traditional bases strengthening methods. Most often, the situation is aggravated by the presence of weak underlying layers with unstable physical and mechanical characteristics in the engineering-geological sections. When reinforcing such bases with the help of traditional piles, they can get negative friction, reducing their bearing capacity by the ground. This article presents a developed algorithm for the construction of combined soil-concrete bored piles with simultaneous fixing of weak engineering and geological elements. At the same time, in areas with weak layers along the length of the piles, the developed geotechni...

Iris Publishers - Peer Review Journal of Civil Engineering GIS and Processing data with SIMUS This is a case with a real structure from a road project in Africa, but with data changed for confidentially reasons. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how a powerful tool such as the Geographic Information System (GIS), may be used jointly with a Multi Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) method. This problem is addressed using both methodologies in two different and sequential steps, when the first precedes the second. Thus, GIS produces information regarding consideration spatial interrelations of all features considered. The MCDM uses that information aiming at the selection of the best alternative. In this case, GIS provides spatial information on a certain area combining about 15 different themes involving environment, social and natural features such as villages, rivers, forests, swamps, etc. Four potential paths where detected, subject to these mentioned features, and then, ...

Iris Publishers - Open Access Journal of Civil Engineering Electroimpulse Device for Manufacture of Continuous Flight Augering Piles The developed electric pulse installation (EPU) is unique and novel in the technical solution for use in the installation of flight augering piles (piles-EDT). The installation of the EPU makes it possible to produce pile-EDT of increased bearing capacity. Due to the presence of a high-energy capacitive accumulator with a switch that is connected to the discharger of the radiator of accumulated energy, the EPU is an original electrotechnical structure. It is a unique high-performance aggregate for the construction of piles of increased load-bearing capacity, as well as cementation of bases. The device has no analogues abroad. It is found wide application in geotechnical construction when erecting piles-EDT in pile fields, fencing of pits, cementation of bases, etc. Read More ...
