Iris Publishers - Open Access Journal of Civil Engineering Hydraulic Facilities Characteristics along the Upstream Lanchang River According the current hydropower development schedule in upstream Lanchang River, numbers of hydraulic power plants with height over 300 meters will be built in the western region of China. These hydraulic power plants would be in crucial situation with the problems of high water head, huge discharge and narrow riverbed. Spillway is the most common structure in power plant which is used to drainage and flood release. According to the previous research, the velocity would be reaching to 55 m/s and the discharge can reach to 300 m3/s.m during spillway operation in the dam height over 300 m. The high velocity and discharge in the spillway may have the problems such as atomization nearby, slides on the side slope and river bank, Vibration on the pier, hydraulic jump, cavitation and the negative pressure on the spill way surface. All these problems may caus...

Iris Publishers - Journals of Civil Engineering Recent Bushfire Impact on Timber Bridges in Northern New South Wales This paper provides preliminary observations and comments following recent field inspection of a number of fire-damaged bridges in northern New South Wales (NSW). The fire event has been described as unprecedented, at least in living memory, with over five million hectares burnt in NSW from September 2019 to late January 2020, comprising mostly national parks and state forest, but also many neighbouring properties and houses. The impact on infrastructure has been profound, with at least three government schools destroyed and numerous timber road bridges damaged or destroyed in eastern NSW. Some roads have been closed for months and are still closed. These events will have long lasting implications. It is clear that changes will be needed to successfully adapt to altering externalities in the future. Read More... Full Text For More Articles in  Current Trends in...

Iris Publishers -  Journal of Civil Engineering Reactive Problem Solving and Proactive Development in Infrastructure Projects The Swedish Transport Administration (STA) is by far the largest public client of transport infrastructure in Sweden. In addition to the responsibility of planning, construction, and operation and maintenance of public roads and railways, the STA has also been commissioned by the Swedish government to be responsible for the overarching and long-term planning of the infrastructure sector development, including promoting innovation and productivity development. Iris Publishers- Civil  & Structural Engineering Current Market Trends of Basalt FRP Rebars Concrete structures made with traditional black steel reinforcement are deteriorating at an alarming pace due to corrosion effects. Many research institutes across the globe are spending lots of resources to overcome this problem by replacing steel reinforcement with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) rebars because these bars are corrosion resistant. FRP rebars are a product of composite materials with raw materials made from sized fibers and thermoset polymeric resin. The fibers can be made from various materials and glass fibers have been most dominant in the US market due to historical developments. However, basalt fiber reinforced polymer rebars (BFRP rebars) are now becoming more popular. With a significant increase in demand for such materials, the number of manufacturers increased notably over the past two decades. Because the production of FRP rebars has not been standardi...

Iris Publishers - Civil Enginering What do Old Newspapers Hide? The article is devoted to the informative possibilities of the Russian newspaper “St. Petersburg Vedomosti” for XIII century from point of view of natural disasters. “St. Petersburg Vedomosti” proved to be a valuable source of information for historical seismicity of not only Russia, but also other countries, including Italy. It not only contains the strong Italian earthquakes not recorded in existing catalogs, but from its publications it became possible to identify one of the key seismic activations in Italy relevant to the events 2016–2017. The analysis of seismic regime allows suggesting the long-term seismic sources in the regions of Norcia, Foggia and Irpinia, what deserve the special study. Interesting data are received on the volcanic events of 1751 in the Savoy Alps, which can serve as a warning when assessing the natural risks of this territory. It may suggest that a special type of explosive ...

Iris Publishers- Civil Enginering A New Method for Reinforcing Concrete Rectangular Section Columns This paper presents a new method for the reinforcement of a rectangular section concrete column by bidirectional prestressed angle steel plates. The rectangular section column is divided into an upper reinforcement section, an axial prestressed elevation section and a lower reinforcement section. Four angle steel plates are installed in the upper and lower reinforcement sections, and the concrete columns are reinforced with circumferential prestressing. In the axial prestressing jacking section, axial prestressing angle steel plates mounted on the upper and lower reinforcing sections are axially prestressed by axial prestressing jacking bolts. A preliminary experimental analysis shows that the load capacity of the concrete column after reinforcement is 2-5 times that of the original concrete column. The implementation of the new method does not affect the use of the co...
