Project Monitoring and Early Warning of Time-Cost Overruns in Earned Value Management

  Abstract Project monitoring and control processes are crucial aspects of project management. To perform an appropriate project tracking, Earned Value Analysis (EVA) has to be implemented to help the project managers to measure project performances. A tool to monitor and control the cost, time and work done of a construction project. Furthermore, it also provides an “Early Warning” signal for immediate corrective action. Thereby, in this study, some work items related to a completed real life construction project were evaluated according to the method of Earned Value and the result implies that the analysis can be very useful in project forecasting and decision making relevant to early warnings. Curvature-Deflection Relations for Polypropylene Fiber-Reinforced Deflection-Hardening Alkali- Activated Slag Composite

  Abstract To obtain a tensile strain-hardening behavior by using the ordinary polypropylene (PP) fiber, the micromechanical model recommends the increase of the fiber low interfacial bond with an ordinary cementitious matrix. It was predicted that the alkali-activated slag (AAS) composite high drying shrinkage performance would affect the fiber interface frictional bond during the pullout. Generally, twenty different PP fiber reinforced AAS composites with drastically different material properties were obtained in this research. In order to alter the drying shrinkage performance of the composites, two different curing methods, namely, heat-treatment and laboratory temperature, were applied to the developed specimens. Decision Support Framework for Inspection and Maintenance; A Focus on Bridges using Post- Tensioning Tendons

  Abstract Aging and decay of transportation facilities, and the higher long-term cost of passive maintenance has led to the need for development of proactive management systems for bridge maintenance, repair and rehabilitation. This paper proposes a framework for Bridge Decision Support Framework (BDSF) as a form of proactive asset management system. A BDSF allows the asset manager to perform economic analyses on a bridge in order to establish priorities and make preliminary selection of preservation, repair or rehabilitation options. Among various bridge systems, segmental bridges using internal and external post-tensioning have faced great challenges due to issues related to the durability of the posttensioning tendons. Although some reserve capacity has been designed into these bridges, failure of tendons can have profound effect in the safety and structural integrity. A Parametric Study on the Effects of Shear Wall Locations in a Typical Five-Story Reinforced Concrete Structure Subjected to a Severe Earthquake

  Abstract To minimize earthquake-induced damages in structures, one of the most reliable ways to design and construct earthquake-resistant buildings is to utilize reinforced concrete shear walls because they increase the structural resistance to lateral loads and effectively stiffens and strengthens the structure. This is known as the best seismic-resistant design method that ensures the stability of multi-story buildings against lateral forces when subjected to strong earthquakes. This paper investigates the effects of the shear wall location in a typical low-rise building to improve earthquake resistance. The study initially models a five-story reinforced concrete structure without shear walls and then adds shear walls at different locations in the structure. Errors in Construction of Facilities in Restricted Conditions

  Abstract The construction of facilities in cramped conditions requires a special approach to the need to develop and implement measures to ensure the safe operation of the buildings surrounding the building within the limits of geotechnical influence. Builders often neglect the impact of the new facility technology on the possible negative effects (cracks on facades due to uneven precipitation, heels, etc.) of the buildings in use. The term «minimum price» is still used when part of a building is erected below zero. This approach completely disregards the notion of «technical utility». At the same time the builders go to any tricks to reduce the cost. The Effectiveness of Thermal Insulated Concrete Blocks in Oman

  Abstract The high consumption of energy became a danger constitutes to the environment and increases the monthly consumer costs. This leads to the think for some alternative materials that can helps us to avoid these problems. The objective of this study is to measure the effectiveness of thermal insulated concrete blocks in Oman. Study of this kind of blocks have many values and in order to evaluate the results compared with nonthermal insulated concrete blocks. This report is summarized, study the energy consumption, environment-impact and measure the consumer satisfaction for the usage of thermal insulated concrete blocks. Evaluation of the Quality of Concrete Structures by the Rebound Hammer Method

  Abstract The quality problems encountered in concrete structures appear at different stages of the construction of works, it is for this reason that for a long time there has been an increased demand for more precise and, at the same time, more flexible methods of concrete quality assessment. This paper presents some notions concerning the Schmidt rebound hammer test which is one of the non-destructive methods most used for the recognition of the condition of building structures. This test is quick and easy, it makes it possible to control the quality of the construction and to indirectly measure the compressive strength of concrete in situ.   Iris Publishers- Peer Review Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering Fundamentals for Cracking Verification of Reinforced Concrete Structures Abstract A mathematical model, named as general method, has been set up to study the cracking behaviour of a concrete tie reinforced by ordinary bars, subjected to a monotonic load. The analysis is performed considering both the crack formation stage and the stabilized cracking stage. In particular, secondary cracks occur in the stabilized cracking stage, modifying the distribution of bond stress along the transmission length. As in the stabilized cracking stage the solution of the general method requires to carry out an iterative numerical procedure, for design purposes the maximum crack width can be determined through a simplified method that allows the main aspects of the structural behaviour to be taken into account. The two-dimensional computations have been performed for different Reynolds number (Re) ranging from 1 to 180 in order to consider different flow regimes; the steady, the periodic and the turbulent flow. The validation of the code with the available literature results regarded both the reliability of the computed solutions and the overall resulting efficiency of the methods.
