Analysis of the Global Impact of the Pandemic (COVID-19) on Construction Industry: Possible Scenarios

Abstract After the first infection of the Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic in December 2019 in Wuhan city in China, it is spreading all over the world. Currently the pandemic cases are increasing globally and its impact on many industries including the construction is increasing. In the case of construction, projects of all types and sizes are at risk and industry participants must consider the impacts the pandemic that may have on projects. These days, the health warning so often heard is “wash your hands”. From the construction industry health perspective, the current warning for stakeholders is “read your contract” prior to proceeding to the next steps. This study assessed the possible impacts of COVID-19 on construction industry with two proposed scenarios namely; ‘Force Majeure’ and Changes in Law’. From the scenarios, remedies provided to the stakeholders in construction industry from the globally applicable contract forms including FIDIC, JCT or NEC provisions...

Phenolic Compounds Contaminants in Water: A Glance

Abstract Water is the fundamental importance for all living organisms on earth. Among the organic pollutants encountered in water, phenol and its derivatives are important to identify and quantify them. It is because of their detrimental effects on aquatic organisms as well as human being. The use of fast detection technique such as spectrophotometric technique, electrochemical methods, and biosensor have practical implication. Furthermore, the use of hybrid technology can be used to remove phenolic from wastewater etc. Read More about this article:  https://irispublishers.com/ctcse/fulltext/phenolic-compounds-contaminants-in-water-a-glance.ID.000593.php Read More about Iris Publishers Google scholar Articles :  https://scholar.google.com/citations?view_op=view_citation&hl=en&user=LoZ6uCQAAAAJ&citation_for_view=LoZ6uCQAAAAJ:f2IySw72cVMC

Cost Effectiveness of Energy Piles in Residential Dwellings in Australia

Abstract The cost effectiveness of energy piles used as part of Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) systems in residential buildings is presented. Structural piles can be used with a dual purpose of providing support to superstructures and of exchanging thermal energy with the ground, thus minimizing capital cost of GSHP systems associated with drilling. To exemplify the economic potential of energy piles, a case study of a representative residential building is undertaken. Results show that energy pile GSHP systems render annual gains of about $600 to $2900 (US dollars) in comparison with other conventional heating and cooling systems. This paper also briefly demonstrates the reduced available thermal capacity of energy piles, compared to traditional borehole ground heat exchangers, due to their inherent short depth and close spacing between piles. Despite this limitations, energy pile GSHP systems are able to satisfy the thermal energy needs for space conditioning of residential bui...

Usage of Optimization Techniques in Civil Engineering During the Last Two Decades

Abstract In the real world, there are many problems in which it is desirable to optimize one or more objective functions at the same time. These are known as single and multi-objective optimization problems respectively and continuous research is being conducted in this field and nature inspired heuristic optimization methods (also called advanced optimization algorithms) are proving to be better than the classical deterministic methods and thus are widely used. These algorithms have been applied to many engineering optimization problems and proved effective for solving some specific kinds of problems. In this paper, a review of the most popular optimization algorithms used in different problems related to the civil engineering during the last two decades is presented. It is hoped that this work will be useful to researchers involved in optimization.
